Olympian Keenan Horne has announced his retirement from international hockey after 11 years of representing South Africa at the highest level. Horne confirmed the news on his social media platforms on Wednesday.
Over more than a decade in the green and gold, Keenan represented South Africa with distinction, earning 132 Test caps and establishing himself as one of the most experienced and respected players of his generation.
He made his South African debut against Austria on 9 January 2015 and scored his first international goal in only his third Test. His first FIH tournament came later that year at the FIH World League Round 2.
In 2017, Horne scored his only international hat-trick for South Africa in a victory over Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa went on to win the tournament and qualify for the 2018 FIH Hockey World Cup.
His international career included appearances at two Olympic Games, in Tokyo and Paris, two FIH Hockey World Cups and two Commonwealth Games. He was also part of the South African team that lifted the inaugural FIH Hockey Nations Cup on home soil in 2022.
It was during that Nations Cup campaign that Keenan celebrated his 100th international appearance. South Africa marked the milestone by progressing to the final before ultimately being crowned champions.
Among the many memorable moments of his career was his contribution to South Africa’s famous victory over Germany at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The timing of his retirement announcement carried added significance, coming exactly five years after that historic result. Keenan found the back of the net as South Africa produced one of the country’s most celebrated international hockey performances.
Beyond the appearances, goals and major tournaments, Keenan’s contribution was defined by his professionalism, competitiveness and commitment to the badge. As a captain and senior member of the national programme, he represented South African hockey with immense pride and helped guide the next generation of players entering the international environment.
South African Hockey thanks Keenan for every appearance, every sacrifice and every moment he gave to the national team.
His contribution to the SA Hockey Men and the broader South African hockey community will be remembered with enormous appreciation.
