South African Hockey marked Youth Day 2026 with a meaningful community activation at the Western Province Youth Day Festival, using the platform to celebrate young people, promote access to the game, and showcase hockey as a sport for all.
The activation formed part of a vibrant morning programme that introduced boys and girls to hockey in a fun, energetic and accessible environment. The day began with a warm-up session before the field was divided into smaller activity stations, where participants took part in modified hockey drills, skills challenges and small-sided activities.
The event also featured the involvement of South African national players, who attended to engage with the young participants, share their journeys and inspire the next generation of hockey players.
A special highlight of the morning was the presence of national captain Dayaan Cassiem, who addressed the children and shared part of his story. Cassiem has remained closely connected to development work in the community and continues to represent what is possible through opportunity, hard work and belief.
South African Hockey President Deon Morgan said the activation reflected the deeper purpose of the organisation’s work.
“Youth Day is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we have to create opportunity, access and inspiration for young South Africans. This activation was about more than introducing children to hockey. It was about showing them that they belong in the game, that their dreams matter, and that the pathway from community hockey to the highest level is possible. Having our national players present made that message even more real.”
The activation was captured by a full outside broadcast crew, with interviews and action from the day forming part of a special five-minute highlights package produced for broadcast during South Africa’s match on Tuesday night.
South African Hockey thanked Western Province Hockey, the organisers of the Youth Day Festival, the participating schools, players, coaches and SABC Broadcast team for helping bring the activation to life.
The Western Province Youth Day activation served as another strong reminder that hockey is not only about elite performance, but also about belonging, opportunity and inspiring the next generation.
