South African Women’s Indoor Hockey goalkeeper Cheree Greyvenstein has announced her retirement from international hockey, closing the curtain on a special journey in the green and gold.
Greyvenstein steps away having earned 75 Test caps for South Africa, a career built on consistency, courage and an unwavering commitment to the badge.
Her international story began in 2017 against Zimbabwe, where South Africa secured an 8–1 victory. It was the first step in a remarkable opening run, with Greyvenstein remarkably going unbeaten in her first 19 Test matches for her country.
She would go on to become a trusted figure in the South African indoor setup, representing the team on the biggest stages in the sport. Greyvenstein was part of the side that delivered a historic fourth-place finish at the 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup, before once again wearing the green and gold at the 2025 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Croatia.
Across her career, Greyvenstein became known as a calm and committed presence between the posts, a player who embraced the pressure of the moment and carried herself with pride every time she stepped onto the court.
SA Hockey Executive Member for High Performance, Reggie Smith, paid tribute to Greyvenstein’s contribution:
“Cheree has been a wonderful servant of South African indoor hockey. To represent your country 75 times is a significant achievement, and to do so with the consistency, humility and pride that she has shown makes it even more special. She has been part of some landmark moments for the women’s indoor programme, including our historic fourth-place finish at the 2023 World Cup, and she leaves the international game with the respect and gratitude of everyone who has shared the journey with her. We thank her sincerely for what she has given to the badge.”
South African Hockey extends its heartfelt thanks to Cheree for her contribution to the national team and to indoor hockey in South Africa. Her journey has been one of service, resilience and pride, and her place in the story of the SA Women’s Indoor Hockey team is firmly secured.
As she steps away from the international game, she does so with the gratitude of the South African hockey family.
