South African Hockey Junior Men named for Sultan of Johor Cup

South African Hockey has named the 18-member squad of the SA Hockey U21 Men for the upcoming Sultan of Johor Cup Malaysia 2022 which is scheduled to begin on 22 October in Johor Bahru. The Africans will take on Australia, Japan, India, hosts Malaysia and defending Champions Great Britain in this year’s edition which is being held after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

This is the tenth edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup with Great Britain being the most successful having won the tournament three times, followed by India and Australia with two titles each. South Africa will become the 11th different side to have competed in the tournament as they make their own debut in the tournament.

The team features a number of players that represented the country in the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup in 2021 in India. Captain Sihle Ngubane is joined by Niel Raath, Marvin Simons, Joshua Davies and 5 goal hitman Cameron le Forrestier. The tournament also marks coach Guy Elliott’s international debut having coached the team at the SA Hockey IPT in Pretoria.

South Africa begin their campaign against Great Britain on the 22 October before taking on India 24 hours later. After a rest day they will play the hosts Malaysia and Asian counterparts Japan the following day. The last rest day will be followed by concluding their action against Australia before playoff matches on the 29 October to finish the tournament off.

The tournament will be televised on YouTube on the Not The Footy Show’s channel.
