Belgium won the third and final match in the Summer Series against the South African men’s hockey team.

Belgium, fourth on the world rankings, won the match 3-0. It was the first time in the series that South Africa, 15th on the rankings, could not score a goal. Belgium dominated most of the game and showed with some brilliant and consitant play why they won the silver medal at the Rio Olympic Games.

In the first chukka there were no goals scored, but in the first minute of the second quarter Belgium’s Matthew Cobbaert got the scoreboard ticking for the visitors. South Africa had a few chances shortly after to get the goal back, but could not convert any of the penalty corners and then Nicolas de Kerpel punished the South Africans with a field goal in the 20th minute. Belgium had a 2-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half Belgium upped the pace and standard even more. They played fast, controlled attacking hockey and gave South Africa no room when the home team was on the attack.

Belgium dominated the third chukka and it was thanks to the efforts of goalkeeper Gowan Jones that kept South Africa in the game. De Kerpel finally scored from a penalty corner after constant attacking play and pressure on the SA defence.

This was the last game for the SA men in the Cape Town Summer Series.

The Summer Series comes to an end tomorrow evening when the South African women’s team play against Belgium at 18:00.
